July 17 Pittsburgh Paper Interviews Dan SullivanIn anticipation of FedEx Ground CEO Dan Sullivan’s retirement in January 2007, the company’s hometown paper runs an interview getting Sullivan’s views of running a business in Pittsburgh.  Sullivan repeats the FedEx company line on the independent contractor scam.  The paper fails to ask about how much FedEx Ground has avoided in Pennsylvania state taxes in its history.

July 10 FedEx Pilots Union Comments on UPS Pilots Contract AnnouncementThe FedEx pilots’ union chairman Capt. David Webb is speaking out on the impact of the UPS pilots’ announced contract offer on the stalled negotiations at FedEx.  The UPS contract offer still has to go to the full membership for ratification, but some of the terms are becoming known in the industry.  FedEx and its pilots’ union are holding bargaining talks this week.

June 14 Judge Upholds ERISA Claims in FedEx Ground Multi-District LitigationThe lawyers’ group representing FedEx Ground and Home Delivery drivers in the national multi-district litigation (MDL) misclassification case report that the Judge has upheld the claims that the drivers should be covered by FedEx Ground employee pension plans.  This ruling allows for the drivers to include any benefits they rightfully would earn as FedEx Ground employees if the courts decide the drivers are employees and not “independent contractors.” The Judge’s order rules that all drivers in all states would be eligible for plan coverage.

June 06 FedEx Express Thwarting EEOC InvestigationThe EEOC is looking into the types of tests FedEx Express uses in its promotions.  The EEOC notes that the company is not cooperating with the investigation while FedEx Express says the EEOC has no standing to continue its investigation.  FedEx Express is already facing a class action lawsuit (Satchell vs FedEx Express; see the FedExWatch.com Express page for more) that alleges that certain skills tests at FedEx Express are discriminatory.

May 30 FedEx Ground CEO Sullivan to Retire in Jan 2007Interesting announcement from FedEx that the CEO of FedEx Ground Dan Sullivan will retire in January 2007.  Sullivan was also founder and CEO of RPS until FedEx bought RPS in 1998.  FedEx issued a press release at 3:30 on a Friday - only two hours the same day after the company announced the Watkins Motor Lines acquisition.

May 30 New York Times Covers FedEx Ground/Home OrganizingThe New York Times labor beat reporter Steven Greenhouse spent a good bit of time writing a story on the FedEx Ground/Home Delivery organizing efforts.  The piece looked at the Northboro, MA organizing drive and the company’s retaliation against the drivers.  The piece only hints at the long standing practice at FedEx of ‘firing first, pay later’ where workers who want to organize are immediately targeted, often fired, and must pursue settlements later for back pay.

May 25 Market Rumors on FedEx Freight - Watkins MarriageA number of financial analysts have covered the reported potential acquisition of Watkins Motor Lines by FedEx Corporation.  The Watkins business would be folded into the FedEx Freight division.  Neither company commented on the news reports.

May 22 FedEx to Purchase Watkins Motor LinesThe FedEx hometown paper is citing “sources” that FedEx will purchase privately-held Watkins Motor Lines “as early as June 1.” Lakeland, FL based Watkins is among the 10 largest less than truckload (LTL) carriers in the country with more than $1 billion in revenues in 2005.  As the article notes, “And just as attractive to FedEx is the fact that Watkins is a non-union carrier.”

April 26 Oregon Jury Awards FedEx Ground Driver MillionsOn April 28, a Multnomah County Circuit Court jury awarded a former FedEx Ground driver more than $7 million in damages.  The driver, Michael Wieber, claimed that the company wrongly terminated his contract.  A FedEx Ground spokesman said the company will appeal the award.

April 12 Gas prices aren't coming down anytime soonFuel costs are running at more than 11 percent of all FedEx expenses in the current fiscal year, up from 6.6 percent two years ago.
